The control device is used by the manager to show its menus and get the user events. The actual GRAPE version only has an X11 control device because all machines supported up to now do support X11. The manager also controls the graphic device, with the manager you can change the preferences of the actual graphic device like grid or patch mode, doublebuffer and several other things. The manager can never be reviewed without the graphic device because a lot of actions made in the manager only manipulate the graphic device, for example the rotation of an object is done by changing the rotation matrix of the graphic device.
