The new GRAPE XDR archiving system provides routines to write data to and read data from files, pipes and sockets. It uses an machine-independent data format and handles references to instances and data arrays. It was written based on the experiences with the transmission of GRAPE data over sockets in the Network-Manager [OP].
The system was designed to replace the old "read" and "write" methods. All "write" methods used in the manager (e.g. by the and buttons in the manag menu, see section 4.3.4) use the new routines to write the data, the corresponding "read" methods are able to read both the old and the new format (the "read" methods are still available for backward compatibility).
